Dresser Refinish

I have been wanting to refinish a dresser for awhile now.  My sister gave this one to me since they were moving and did not have the space for it.

FREE, wahoo!!
6 hours later it looked like this, that was a ton of sanding. My arms felt like they were still vibrating, all night long. As you can see in the top photo it was a nice afternoon when I started,
and in the bottom photo the sun had hit the road and was long gone.
I thought that it looked pretty this way with maybe a white wash to seal it. But oh no, I was going for something crazy and bold, PINK!! The dresser is going in my daughters room so what the heck pink it is.

After several layers of pink paint, some black glazing and 20 new drawer knobs I ended up with this! I cannot say that the pink is my favorite shade but it is growing on me. I purchased the zebra print knobs at Hobby Lobby. They have dozens of different and unique knobs there.
I figure when my girls grow out of pink I will put a couple of coats of black over it and keep it around, assuming it makes it that long with my very helpful little girls using it.

If you want more info on glazing go to my magnetic board post and there are more details on that.

Is it too pink? Let me know what you think.

if you know the brand and color of the paint I would SOOOO appreciate it.

  32. Jenni, A fellow blogger sent me over to

    http://madiganmade.blogspot.com/2010/08/work-smarter.html

In the tutorial it will teach you how to create your own list and explains every little detail you need to know.

Basically you sign up with Inlinz (which is free) and start a linky party for your own blog and one by one YOU add all of the linky party's that you joined. When you are finished Inlinkz will give you a code that you paste at the bottom of your post. You can use that code over and over on each of your posts. It take a while to initially set up but once its done it's saves you a ton of time on your future posts.

I hope I did not confuse you, don't worry the link I gave you explains everything very clearly. Good Luck and thanks for stopping by!

  37. hi,

its alicia again. I finally got my dresser sanded and ready for painting. I was headed to buy the paint and realized that i asked you for the color but I didn't know what finish you used. so, What finish did you use for the watermelon pink. I haven't painted furniture (except using spray paint)before so I am not sure what the best finish for the paint is???

  38. I used semi-gloss paint. I did not want it to be too shiney so I went with semi-gloss. You can go with flat, semi-gloss or gloss. Semi is the perfect in-between. Good luck.

  40. Love the dresser! I need to do one, too and now you've given me motivation!
Just happened across your blog and am now following!

  41. LOVE how the dresser turned out!!Way cool! I'm beginning a project today using some glaze. What technique did you use with the glaze? The way you did it is exactly how I want to distress my piece.
    THANKS!!!!!

  42. OCCricut- I used a glaze that I tinted black then I painted the glaze on really heavy in all of the corners and decals and pretty much left it that way. I did wipe some off with a damp rag in places that I accidentally painted to much. Sorry I did not get back to you sooner, I was out of town for the weekend. I hope this info was not to late.

  43. ok I finally got my dresser finished. thanks for all your help. i was going to attach the picture for you to see but there isn't a way to do that here.

  44. WAY CUTE! You give me inspiration. my mom gave me a dresser nightstand and mirror and they are an ugly gold and beige. I am going to do red and black to match my craft room (that is where they are going)

  45. Nice! You can never have too much pink when you have a daughter!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I like the idea of keeping it the way it looked after sanding it and doing a white wash. How do you do a white wash?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Wendy- Honestly I don't know how to do a white wash. I would do some web searching and I bet you could find a tutorial on it. Sorry I was not much help.

  48. Question: A friend gave me an older secretary for my daughter and she wants to paint it lime green. Problem is... I HATE sanding. Is there a way to paint without sanding??

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm new to this, so hope I am posting correctly....love the dresser!! You did an awesome job! I am a fan of BIN Oil Based Primer as I also hate sanding. I have a dresser that I can't wait to use your colors on...there is no such thing as too much PINK!!!
    Fantastic blog, thanks for sharing!!

  50. nursymom- I am pretty sure that there is a paint that cuts out the sanding. I don't know what it's called. Maybe check Home Depot and ask them.
